He now concentrates solely on projects that are open to the creative use of sound, working with filmmakers that allow sound ideas to be explored and incorporated in a collaborating way from the beginning, as early as the script stage. That way each project benefits from this approach, enabling creative sound design to be a crucial and effective component of filmmaking.
But because it plays such an important role in storytelling, once all other creative decisions have been made (final script, production design, cinematography, editing, etc) it's usually too late at this point to shape and design the soundtrack in any kind of creative way.
All that's left to do then is the technical tasks of dialogue and sound effects editing and backgrounds - sometimes to repair the film by disguising mistakes, bad edits or weak scenes.
